From the diverse belief traditions of pre-Columbian societies in North and South America to the colonial conception of witchcraft to the Victorian supernatural, people have sought to explain and ascribe meaning to the world around them in various ways. Consider the historical, cultural, and social contexts in which different societies experienced and explored their world—and the complex role magic plays within culture.
